From Open Ground to Opening Day
Baseball field construction starts long before any infield mix is delivered. Athletic Field Crew plans and measures the area so the dimensions and layout are correct for the league that will play on it, then prepares and levels the ground, installs proper drainage and builds the base areas for the infield and warning track. Only then do we add the correct soil and turf materials, install the grass and build the pitcher’s mound, home plate and base areas. Quality workmanship at each stage means the field plays consistently and drains properly for years instead of needing a renovation in its second season.
Our Three-Stage Build
1. Plan and Measure
The area is planned and measured to make sure the dimensions and layout are correct for your league and level of play.2. Prepare, Level and Drain
The ground is prepared and leveled, proper drainage is installed and the base areas for the infield and warning track are built.3. Build the Playing Surface
The correct soil and turf materials are added, the grass is installed and the pitcher’s mound, home plate and base areas are built.
What Goes Into the Infield
The infield skin is built from Washington Ball Mix, laser-graded so it sheds water evenly, with Turface conditioner worked in to manage moisture. The mound is built up with packing clay and MoundMaster clay blocks so it holds its height and slope under a full season of pitching, and the batter’s boxes and base areas get the same clay treatment. The warning track is laid with Marco Clay warning track material. Bases, home plate and the pitching rubber are set and secured at the correct measurements before the final inspection.

What are the steps in building a new baseball or softball field?

Do you seed or sod new fields?
Either. Once the soil is prepared we install the turf by seeding or by laying sod, depending on your timeline, budget and when the field needs to be playable.
