Softball Fields Wear Differently
A softball field renovation follows the same discipline as a baseball renovation, but a softball diamond is its own field. The infield is smaller and entirely skinned on many fields, so the whole playing surface is dirt that has to be level and drain properly. There is no raised mound; instead a flat pitching circle with a lane and landing area that wears into a trench over a season. Base distances and the pitching distance are shorter and vary by age group and league. Athletic Field Crew sets every edge, grade and measurement to the layout you actually play on, and never assumes a baseball dimension will do.
The Renovation Process
Inspect
Infield skin, outfield, pitching circle, home plate, bases, warning track and drainage are checked for damage and problem areas.Repair the Infield
Dirt edges are sod-cut, holes and low spots are filled with the proper infield mix, then the surface is raked and leveled.Rebuild the Pitching Circle and Batter’s Boxes
Packing clay is added where the lane, landing area and boxes have worn, packed down and reshaped to the correct dimensions.Drag and Laser Grade
An ABI drag smooths the surface and removes cleat marks; the laser confirms the infield is level and sloped to shed water.Check Bases and Equipment
Bases, home plate, pitching rubber and other equipment are secured and confirmed in good condition.Final Inspection
A full walk of the field to confirm it is level, safe, properly marked and ready for play.
Drainage and the All-Dirt Infield
On a fully skinned softball infield there is no grass to hide a drainage problem. Water either runs off or it sits. Laser grading sets a consistent slope across the whole skin, and the right infield mix and conditioner keep the surface firm when it is wet and workable when it is dry. Where the inspection shows a deeper drainage issue, we tell you what we found and what it would take to fix it before we grade the surface.

How is softball field renovation different from baseball?
The process is the same, but the layout is not. Softball fields have a flat pitching circle rather than a raised mound, a smaller infield and different base and pitching distances, so every measurement, edge and grade is set to the softball layout your league plays on.
Do you maintain the pitching circle on softball fields?
Yes. The pitching circle takes the same wear a mound does. We rebuild the pitching lane and landing area with packing clay, level the circle and confirm the pitching rubber is set at the correct distance for your league.
Can you fix drainage and low spots?
Yes. Drainage is one of the first things we inspect. Low spots are filled with the right material and the surface is laser-graded so it is level and sloped to shed water off the infield instead of pooling on it.
